Once upon a time, in a world filled with second chances, two very different dogs found each other and became inseparable friends. Buster, a magnificent Mioritic Sheepdog, was rescued from Romania in the most heartbreaking of conditions. He was nothing but skin and bones, a shadow of the strong and noble dog he was meant to be. Against all odds, he survived, thanks to love, care, and his incredible will to live. 

Spud, a feisty little terrier, had his own journey of hardship. Abandoned in Romania and passed from home to home in the UK before coming into our care, his spirit was fearful, and he only felt safe in an environment of trust and familiarity. Like Buster, Spud was a misfit, misunderstood by the world but deserving of so much more. 

When they came into forever-home-foster through the sanctuary scheme, these two unlikely companions formed a bond that was nothing short of magical. Despite their differences – Big Boy Buster with his towering presence and Little Spud with his tenacious energy – they became the best of friends. Together, they made us laugh every day with their antics. They were “Little & Large,” partners in crime, filling our hearts with joy. 

But as life often reminds us, even the strongest bonds are not immune to time. In December of last year (2023), we had to say goodbye to Buster, who bravely battled hemangiosarcoma. Spud, who had been his constant shadow, mourned the loss of his big protector deeply. Yet, in his grief, Spud found purpose again, becoming a guardian angel to Aran, one of our elderly dogs, watching over him with gentle devotion. 

This November (2024), fate dealt us another cruel and heartbreaking blow as Spud joined his beloved Buster over the Rainbow Bridge. Spud approached life with incredible spirit and joy, embracing each moment fully. Even as he battled the same cruel cancer for nine months, he remained his vibrant, loving self until almost his last day, when he drifted away peacefully. Though our hearts are truly broken, we find solace in imagining them reunited, chasing each other through fields of endless sunshine, whole and happy once more. 

Their story is one of resilience, love, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship. By sponsoring Buster and Spud’s memory, you are helping to feed and medicate other darling dogs in our care, ensuring their legacy lives on in every wagging tail and hopeful heart we save.
