Louie

For Rehabilitation Foster Devon or Cornwall

Rehabilitation fostering is the first step in helping dogs like Louie. You’ll provide a safe, loving home while we work closely with you to assess Louie, understand his behaviour and help him move forward. Free professional behaviour rehabilitation guidance will be part of this process.

Paws2Freedom will support you every step of the way and covers all vet costs, so you’ll never be on your own.

Our plan is that once we’ve all got to know each other better, Louie will find his forever home, either with his wonderful foster family or with another very special family who’s the perfect match for him. And if after careful assessment, everyone agrees that adoption isn’t the right path for Louie, he’ll always have a place to call home with Paws2Freedom, where he’ll become part of our sanctuary family, living a wonderful home life alongside the other sanctuary dogs, surrounded by love, fun and adventures for the rest of his days.

Louie’s family aren’t giving up on him. They’re making the most loving and responsible decision they can, because they want him to have the happy, fulfilling family life he deserves.

If you think you could offer Louie the loving rehabilitation foster home he’s looking for, we’d be delighted to hear from you. Cornwall & Devon only, please.

Current Location:
Louie is not yet in Cornwall and a meet & greet will therefore not be possible beforehand.

Rescue Story

Paws2Freedom - Meet Louie, a 5 year old male Cocker Spaniel looking for a loving rehabilitation foster home in Devon or Cornwall.

Louie is a much-loved five-year-old Cocker Spaniel whose family have made the heartbreaking decision to ask Paws2Freedom for help. They adore him and have cherished him since he was a puppy, but life has changed. With a busy toddler and a new baby in the home, and following two recent warning bite incidents involving adults, they have had to face the difficult reality that they can no longer safely manage the situation.

Importantly, Louie has never shown any issues with the children. However, his family understand that young children cannot always recognise a dog’s boundaries, and they simply cannot risk an innocent mistake having serious consequences.

Throughout Louie’s life they have worked hard to understand his needs. They recognised that he could sometimes be protective of valuable resources, such as his bed, food bowl and puzzle toys, and managed this by respecting his boundaries. They always waited until Louie had finished eating before approaching his food bowl and chose not to use puzzle toys.

During an unexpected family emergency, Louie stayed with relatives where he gave a warning bite when his boundaries were not understood. A short while after returning home, he gave a second warning bite when he was stroked whilst resting. Although both bites broke the skin, neither required medical treatment and both healed without intervention.

His family did exactly what responsible owners should do. Louie underwent a full veterinary examination to rule out pain or any underlying medical condition and was found to be a healthy boy. They also sought advice from a qualified behaviourist, whose report will form an important part of Louie’s rehabilitation programme with Paws2Freedom.

Rather than see Louie spend his life separated from the family he loves or living in kennels, they have chosen to give him the opportunity to receive rehabilitation and discover the future that is right for him.

Louie is currently looking for a Rehabilitation Foster Home and is not yet available for adoption.

Rehabilitation fostering is the first step in helping dogs like Louie. His foster family will provide a safe, loving home while Paws2Freedom works closely alongside them to assess Louie, better understand his behaviour and continue his rehabilitation. Professional behavioural support will form part of this process, and Paws2Freedom will provide ongoing guidance throughout while covering all veterinary costs.

The aim of rehabilitation fostering is to give Louie the time, stability and understanding he needs before any long-term decisions are made.

Once Louie has completed his rehabilitation, one of three things may happen:

• Louie may be adopted by his rehabilitation foster family.

• Louie may find a carefully matched forever home with another family.

• Or, if everyone agrees that adoption would not be in Louie’s best interests, he will always have a loving home with Paws2Freedom as part of the sanctuary family, living alongside the other sanctuary dogs in a real home environment, surrounded by love, fun and adventures for the rest of his days.

Louie is a happy, affectionate and intelligent boy with a wonderful personality. He is friendly with people and other dogs, exceptionally well trained and loves learning new things.

Being from working Cocker Spaniel lines, Louie thrives when both his mind and body are kept active. He does not need a working home, but he will flourish with people who understand spaniels and enjoy providing plenty of mental and physical enrichment. Scent work, agility, flyball, retrieving games, swimming, fun training sessions and outdoor adventures would all suit him perfectly.

Louie absolutely adores toys and, if there’s a ball involved, you’ll have his full attention. He travels brilliantly, enjoys accompanying his people on adventures and can happily be left for short periods once settled into a routine.

He is crate trained and happily chooses to relax in his crate with the door left open.

Louie is a true “Velcro Spaniel” who loves being close to his people. He thrives on being included in family life and would love a home where he can sleep close to his humans at night.

To give Louie the very best chance of success, Paws2Freedom will be looking for an experienced, dog-savvy, adult-only rehabilitation foster home with people who understand canine body language, respect his boundaries and are committed to continuing his positive, reward-based rehabilitation. A secure, adequately sized garden will be essential.
